"Paisley"

Wendy and Bonnie Flower are known for their cult album "Genesis," which has influenced such modern bands as Stereolab and Broadcast. The duo’s jazz-inflected psych-folk has been lavishly praised for its inventive melodies and beautiful harmonies.

The Flower sisters were born and raised on the San Francisco Peninsula. Their father, drummer Arthur Flower was a fixture on the Bay Area scene, including a lengthy stint in the house band of famed Bimbo’s 365 Club. Their mother Jeane sang with big bands. With Cal Tjader as their unofficial godfather, the girl heard a wealth of jazz and Latin, as well as classical music during childhood. They grew to love folk, pop and rock.

Younger sister Bonnie played drums and guitar. Wendy, who has played numerous instruments, including violin, became the lead vocalist of the promising Bay Area band Crystal Fountain.

In 1969, in their early teens, Wendy & Bonnie recorded the now classic “Genesis” album. It was produced by jazz great Gary McFarland (Wendy & Bonnie are interviewed in Kristian St. Clair's new documentary about the musician/arranger/producer). Session players included Larry Carlton, Jim Keltner and Mike Melvoin. Though it was garnering interest from radio, TV and press, the album quickly disappeared, due to the bankruptcy of the label, Skye Records.

Wendy subsequently sang with numerous other Bay Area bands. With sister Bonnie, she recorded jingles and added vocals on sessions with prominent artists, such as Tjader. Wendy earned her childhood education degree and taught music to young people and released a children’s music cassette, “My Pet Songs,” in the late ‘80s. She and her husband wrote and recorded “We Care,” the theme song for Project Wee Care, an organization which enables children to help the homeless.

Meanwhile, “Genesis” had become a cult favorite. Interest from such artists as Stereolab and Broadcast, as well as such producers as Irwin Chusid and Mike Alway led to the album’s release on CD via the Sundazed label.

Since its CD release, “Genesis” has continuously received airplay on many college, free-form and folk radio and internet stations.

Welsh band Super Furry Animals chose a sample from “By The Sea,” one of the songs from “Genesis,” to open their “Phantom Power” CD. While playing San Francisco’s legendary Fillmore Theater in 2003, they invited Wendy to join them on stage. She performed a duet of the band’s “Hello Sunshine” with front man Gruff Rhys to a standing, cheering, full house. SFA included the rehearsal of that number in their DVD documentary “American Sasquatch,” a bonus disc in their “Songbook: The Singles Vol.1.”

In 2006, Wendy played New York City’s the Tonic with Gruff Rhys, Jane Weaver and Voice of the Seven Woods. In June 2007, again joined by Jane Weaver and Voice of the Seven Woods, Wendy was warmly received as the closing act at the U.K.’s Llama Festival. Also backing her were members of Major Dawson, Booger Red, Beep Seals and All Traps Set.

She then played the Meltdown Festival, which was curated by Jarvis Cocker. Sean O’Hagan and the High Llamas backed her at that show, where she was featured as one of the “Lost Ladies of Folk,” along with Susan Christie and Bonnie Dobson. Again Jane Weaver joined her on harmonies.

“By The Sea” is also included on the Andy Votel Finders Keepers compilation, “Folk Is Not A Four Letter Word.” “Paisley Window Pane” is included in the more recent “Bearded Ladies” release.

In 2006, Wendy released “Flower Power," a children's folk-rock, ‘60s-ish message album. A portion of the proceeds goes to Free the Children. Wendy is currently completing a “grown-up” rock/techno/folk/jazz/Wendy & Bonnie-ish CD. She will also be heard on the upcoming Jane Weaver (Misty Dixon) album.

Bonnie, who at one point was approached to join the Bangles, lived in Southern California for several years, playing jazz with such luminaries as some of Johnny Carson's "Tonight Show" band members. Currently living near Sedona, Arizona, she, too, is currently working on a new CD and continues to perform. A visual artist, she also creates hand-painted glasses and greeting cards.

In Nov., 2008, Sundazed released a deluxe edition of "Genesis," with previously unreleased tracks. It’s offered in double-CD and triple-LP HD vinyl packages.
